Kelly McGonigal
She is a health psychologist and professor at Stanford University. She is known for her work in the field of “scientific assistance”, which focuses on translating psychology and neuroscience knowledge into practical strategies that support health and wellbeing. Articles of main media that discuss aspects related to the internal conflicts of modern lifestyles quote her regularly. A long-time defender of self-compassion and full attention as strategies to face stress, McGonigal has changed lately her approach about troublesome aspects of stress; during a TedGlobal 2013 talk, she emphasized the importance of an individual's subjective belief in himself as someone capable of successfully overcoming stress as a crucial factor in his real response towards it.
She was raised in New Jersey by her parents, who were public school teachers that encouraged intellectual achievements. Although today she is thankful for their protection, McGonigal says that at the time it seemed like a “block”. She describes her upbringing “both good and stressful”. She received a B.A. in Psychology and a B.S. in Mass Communication from Boston University, and her Ph.D from Stanford University, where she is a Psychology professor and also gives a public course on willpower.
